Roblox Security: How to Protect Your Game from Exploits
Never trust the client

This is the foundation of Roblox security. A determined exploiter has complete control over their local state and network traffic. They can decompile scripts, fire RemoteEvents at any frequency with arbitrary arguments, and modify anything in their local DataModel. Any security measure that relies only on client-side enforcement will eventually be bypassed.

All critical logic must run on the server. The server is the source of truth for game state, player progression, and critical decisions. The client renders the world and sends input. Nothing more.

Validate every remote call

Every piece of data sent from a client must be validated by the server before it is used. There are three layers:
  • Context validation: Can this player perform this action right now? Are they close enough to the shop? Do they have the required key? Is their character alive?
  • Type validation: Is the data the right type? An exploiter can send a table that mimics an Instance. Check that arguments are actual Instances and that they live in the expected location.
  • Value validation: Are the numbers within expected boundaries? A purchase quantity should be greater than zero. An item ID should correspond to a real item in your game.
NaN is a special case. It passes type checks because [c]typeof(NaN)[/c] returns "number", but it fails every comparison. An exploiter can use NaN to bypass range checks and create invalid trades. Use [c]math.isfinite()[/c] to detect and reject it.

Rate limiting

Any server-side logic that can be triggered by a client can be spammed. Rate limiting controls how often these actions can run. The token bucket algorithm is a common approach: each player has a bucket that holds tokens, actions spend tokens, and the bucket refills at a steady rate. This allows short bursts but prevents sustained abuse.

Never rely only on client-side rate limits. Enforce them on the server.

Secure your DataStore operations

Exploiters can corrupt DataStores by sending invalid data or exploiting race conditions. Validate all data before saving. Cap string lengths. Check that table indices are not NaN or nil. Sanitize strings with [c]utf8.len()[/c] to ensure they are valid UTF-8.

For trading systems, validate all data before committing changes. Use transaction-like patterns where every player's data is checked before any changes are applied. If any part fails, revert everything.

Server-side detection

Validation stops most exploits, but some behavior slips through. Server-side detection flags actions that are technically possible but highly improbable for a legitimate player.

A honeypot is a RemoteEvent that no legitimate client script ever fires. Any traffic it receives must come from an exploiter. When the server detects this, log the incident and kick the player.

Use a suspicion score rather than instant bans. Increment the score when a player fails heuristic checks. Only kick or ban after multiple varied detections push the score past a high threshold.

Where to start

Keep game logic in ServerScriptService from day one. Never place it in ReplicatedStorage or Workspace. Threat model every new feature: what happens if a client sends any value for any parameter? What happens if this feature is used a thousand times per second?

Security is not something you add later. It is something you build in from the start.
