Roblox terrain tools: sculpting, painting, and generating landscapes

Roblox Studio's Terrain Editor lets you generate and sculpt detailed environments such as mountains, bodies of water, grass-covered hills, or a flat desert. Terrain is made up of grids of voxels, which are 4x4x4 stud regions in the 3D world with a set material. This guide covers the tools you need to start building your own landscape.

Getting started

Open the Terrain Editor from Studio's Home tab or from Window, then 3D. The editor has two tabs: Create and Edit. The Create tab includes the Generate tool for procedural terrain generation. The Edit tab includes the Select, Transform, Fill, Sea Level, Draw, Sculpt, Smooth, Paint, and Flatten tools.

The Draw and Sculpt tools

The Draw tool adds or subtracts terrain using the brush. It works in a dual mode where holding Ctrl toggles subtract mode instead of the default add mode. Holding Shift temporarily activates the Smooth tool.

The Sculpt tool also adds or subtracts terrain, but it includes a strength slider for more gentle manipulation. Unlike Draw, Sculpt only grows or erodes terrain that already exists. Use Draw to create new shapes and Sculpt to refine them.

Both tools let you choose from a sphere, box, or cylinder brush shape, with a base size between 1 and 64 studs.

The Paint tool

The Paint tool paints a terrain material over an existing material or replaces one material with another. In Paint mode, you choose the painting material from the tool's picker tiles. In Replace mode, you choose both the source material to replace and the target material to replace it with.

Paint changes the look without changing the shape. You can use it to add grass, sand, snow, or any other material to your terrain.

The Fill tool

The Fill tool replaces all material within a selected region with another material. It is useful for creating large bodies of water or filling in areas with a specific material. You set the size, position, and fill mode (Replace or Subtract), then click to apply.

Generating terrain procedurally

The Generate tool allows you to procedurally generate terrain in seconds. This is useful if you want to create a large map and fine-tune terrain details. You can also import a heightmap and colormap for more control over the final result.

For more precise, dynamic, or procedural terrain editing, you can script terrain creation using the Terrain class. Methods like FillBall, FillBlock, FillCylinder, FillRegion, and FillWedge let you create terrain programmatically.

Tips for better terrain

Start with the Generate tool to create a base landscape, then use Draw and Sculpt to refine the shape. Use Paint to add materials and Smooth to clean up rough edges. Keep your brush size large for broad strokes and small for detail work.
