Roblox Spatial Voice (Voice Chat) Guide (October 2026): How to Turn It On, Age Check Rules, Muting, Fixes
Quick Summary
  • Voice Chat is Roblox's voice feature. It is off by default, and only accounts aged 13 or older with a completed age check can turn it on.[1][2]
  • The age check is done with Facial Age Estimation or a government-issued ID. Phone verification no longer counts as a way in.[1][3]
  • You switch it on from the headphone icon or the in-experience settings menu, in any experience that has opted in. Each developer decides whether their game supports it.[1][2]
  • Roblox can record voice audio anywhere on the platform for safety and moderation. Recordings are deleted after 7 days if no violation is reported or detected.[4]
  • Voice Chat works on Desktop, Mobile, VR, PlayStation and Xbox, but only in a set list of supported countries. Outside those regions, ID Verification is the route in.[2]
What Voice Chat Actually Is

Roblox's help articles call this feature Voice Chat, and that is the name used in the in-game settings and on the official support pages.[1][2]

Roblox describes Voice Chat as a feature that lets people communicate on Roblox as naturally as they communicate in the physical world.[2]

It is not a global switch that makes every game talkable. Each developer chooses whether to integrate Voice Chat into their experience, so one game may support it while the next one does not.[2] The official way to check before you join is to read the experience's Description page, which is where Roblox says support is indicated.[2]

Keep in mind that you only hear and are heard by people in your own session. Roblox sorts users into age groups, age-checked users can chat with others in similar age groups, and age-based chat is designed to prevent children younger than 16 from communicating with adults.[2][5]

Requirements: Age, Age Check, and Region

Three things have to line up before the toggle shows up.
  1. Age. You must be at least 13 years old.[1]
  2. Age check. You must have completed one of the two methods: Facial Age Estimation or ID verification.[1][3]
  3. Region. Voice Chat is available to all 13+ age checked users in a specific list of countries. Roblox names the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, India, the Philippines, Romania, Poland, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands among them.[2]

Facial Age Estimation works by analysing images and video of your face. Roblox deletes those images and video after processing, and the estimated age is what places you into an age group: 5-8, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20 and 21+.[3]

If you would rather use documents, ID verification uses a government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license, passport or residency card. It is only available to users aged 13 and above, and once your ID is verified that status can only be undone once per account.[3]

Worth knowing if you are following an older guide: phone verification is not a valid method to gain access to Voice Chat following the recent updates.[1]

Roblox has been tightening this across the whole platform. The company announced in November 2025 that it would require a facial age check for all users accessing chat features, making it the first online gaming platform to do so, and the requirement expanded globally in early January 2026 wherever chat is available.[6]

Turning Voice Chat On and Off

Once your age check is complete, there are two ways in.
    1. Click the headphone icon inside any experience that supports Voice Chat.[1]
    2. Open the in-experience settings and flip the Voice Chat toggle.[1]
      [/list=1]

Users who are 13 or older in supported regions get access to Voice Controls inside supporting experiences, and the headphone icon is how you connect to voice.[1] You disconnect by going to in-game settings and toggling Voice Chat from Connected to Disconnected.[2] On PlayStation you join from the in-experience settings.[1][2]

Muting works at two levels. Your own microphone can be muted or unmuted on your device or inside the experience.[1] Inside an experience, the microphone icon sits in the upper left of the screen. When muted it shows a red slash, and a red dot on the icon means Roblox is recording audio.[2]

      Voice Chat Availability by Platform

Voice Chat is available on Desktop, Mobile, VR, PlayStation and Xbox.[2] The catch is regional availability, which varies by account and is not always obvious from the outside.
      PlatformHow you connectNotes
DesktopHeadphone icon or in-experience settingsFull Voice Controls for 13+ age checked users
MobileHeadphone icon or in-experience settingsMicrophone icon sits in the upper left of the screen
VRHeadphone icon or in-experience settingsSame age check and region rules apply
PlayStationIn-experience settingsJoin Voice is available from the settings menu
XboxIn-experience settingsSame age check and region rules apply
If you do not see the join voice icon inside games after completing ID verification or Facial Age Estimation, Roblox's own guidance is that the feature may not be available in your region.[1][2] That is the most common reason the toggle is missing, and it is worth ruling out before you start troubleshooting your microphone.

      Muting, Blocking, and Reporting

Roblox shows a speaker icon next to the username and above the avatar of other users who have voice chat enabled, so you can tell who can hear and be heard before you say anything.[2]
      • Mute someone: click the speaker icon over their avatar or next to their name in the Roblox menu. This only mutes voice chat, not text chat, and it lasts only for the current session.[2]
      • Unmute someone: open the Roblox menu and click the speaker icon next to their username.[2]
      • Block someone: blocking stops them from engaging with you in Voice Chat or in experience text chat.[2]
      • Report abuse: use the Report Abuse feature. You can specify "Voice Chat" when filing the report.[2]
      Voice Recording and Your Privacy

This is the part that surprises people. Roblox may record voice audio anywhere on the platform for moderation and safety purposes.[4] Recordings are used for moderator evaluation of abuse reports, for training and evaluating automatic safety detection systems, and for measuring the overall safety of the platform.[2][4]

Recordings are encrypted and can be accessed only by moderation or related safety teams. If no Community Standard violation is reported or detected, recordings are deleted after 7 days.[4] Roblox states it does not use voice recordings for advertising or marketing and does not sell voice data.[2][4]

If you want to limit how your voice data is used, go to Settings, then Privacy & content maturity, then Communication, then Voice data usage, and update the "Voice data for product improvements" setting.[2] Roblox may also use voice data for things like speech to text transcription depending on your privacy settings, and that switch controls it.[2]

You cannot use voice chat with recording switched off. Roblox's position is that all voice interactions are subject to the same reporting and moderation systems, including voice recording.[2][4]

      FAQ

Why is the Voice Chat toggle missing?
Usually it means your account has not completed an age check, or you are in a region where Voice Chat is not available. Roblox says that if the join voice icon does not appear after ID verification or Facial Age Estimation, the feature may not be available in your region.[1][2]

Can I verify with my phone number?
No. Phone verification is not a valid method to gain access to Voice Chat following the recent updates.[1]

Does every game support Voice Chat?
No. Developers choose whether to integrate Voice Chat into their experience, so it may not be supported in the game you are playing. Check the experience Description page to see whether it supports it.[2]

Can I turn voice chat off later?
Yes. Go to the in-game settings and toggle Voice Chat from Connected to Disconnected, or use the Voice Chat toggle in experience settings.[1][2]

What happens if someone is abusive in voice chat?
Mute them and file an abuse report. You can specify "Voice Chat" when reporting. Users that violate the Terms of Use or Community Standards may be suspended or removed from Voice Chat and face further moderation action.[1][2]

How long are voice recordings kept?
If no Community Standard violation is reported or detected, recordings are deleted after 7 days.[4]
