Roblox 18+ Games and the US 18+ DevEx Rate: Restricted Content Rules, Age Checks, and the Standout Games Push (October 2

Quick Summary
Roblox spent most of 2025 and 2026 quietly rebuilding who the platform is for. Three moves landed close together and they point the same direction.
In March 2026, Roblox launched the Incubator and Jumpstart creator programs. Incubator takes up to 40 experienced teams per cohort into a six-month, milestone-driven program. Jumpstart is continuous and aimed at creators releasing their first game. The programs are not the story on their own. What Roblox said it was looking for is: RPG, strategy, puzzle and shooter games, deeper metagame systems, and visual styles that make players think "Wait, that's Roblox?"[9]
In April 2026 came the money. Roblox announced a 42% DevEx increase for spend from age-checked 18+ U.S. players, effective June 8, 2026. The company's own numbers: the U.S. 18 to 34 cohort is growing over 50% year over year, and that cohort monetizes over 50% higher than under-18 users.[1]
In June 2026 the account system caught up. Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts went live globally on June 16, 2026, after test launches in Australia, Indonesia, the Netherlands and New Zealand. Chat became something you unlock by age checking, not something everyone gets by default.[7]
None of these were isolated feature drops. They are one strategy: make the adult audience worth building for, then give it the safety plumbing it needs to exist at all.
The Restricted (18+) content rules, in plain terms
Restricted content on Roblox is not "uncensored." It is a specific, bounded set of things that are allowed at all. The policy is explicit about what stays banned: sexual content is prohibited everywhere on the platform, including in Restricted games. That covers implied, suggestive and direct sexual content in behavior, interactions or settings. Extreme violence, animal abuse, real-world war crimes and real-world mass shootings are out too.[5]
What Restricted games can include:
The labels and who can open them:
The age floor moved up in November 2025. Roblox stopped showing search results and recommendations for Restricted games to under-18 users, then blocked access to those games entirely for under-18 accounts, up from the old 17+ requirement.[6] Creators of games that were already labeled 17+ kept access, but publishing a new Restricted game now requires the creator to be 18 or older and age verified.[6]
One detail people miss: when a game's label flips to Restricted, every running server restarts and removes everyone who has not age-verified as 18+. Studio does the same to any open collaboration session.[4]
The U.S. 18+ DevEx rate: what actually qualifies
The headline number is simple: $0.54 per 100 Earned Robux instead of $0.38. The fine print decides whether you ever see it.
Qualifying spend is limited to four things: developer products, passes, subscriptions and private servers. In-game avatar items and Marketplace items do not qualify.[2][10]
The player side has two conditions. The player must have verified their age as 18 or older through facial age estimation or government ID, and they must be a U.S. player by economic location, which excludes VPNs.[2] Creator eligibility is not region-restricted. Any creator, including existing ones, qualifies automatically, with no application.[12]
The game side is where most games fail. Qualifying games need player characters that spend 100% of active playtime as one of these:[2]
The most common mistake I see in dev forum threads is treating this as a passive bump. It is not. You have to verify your own account, lock your avatar settings to R15 Only, and keep any R6 path out of active play, or the rate simply never applies.
Standout Games, and the discovery shift behind it
Standout Games is a curated sort on the Home page, handpicked by Roblox's curation team, that exists to surface "novel" games. The page says games that are novel usually have unique and in-depth gameplay mechanics, distinctive visual styles, or sit in an underrepresented genre.[3]
The bias is explicit. Roblox names RPG, strategy, puzzle and shooter as heavily underrepresented despite demand from older age groups, and it says outright that games that look like a copy or reskin of a popular Roblox game are a hard sell.[3] On visuals it is looking for teams building hyper-realistic 3D assets, stylized 2.5D sprites or high-fidelity avatars.
Roblox recommends that applicants have console and mobile optimization, custom or R15 rigs with layered accessories and dynamic heads, and regular experience events for updates and seasonal content.[3] The nomination is a survey, reviewed on an ongoing basis, with an email either way.
Alongside the sort, Roblox is testing genre-focused sorts, activity-based sorts like "Because you played X," a sort for first-time players, and video previews directly on Home.[12] The stated goal is to measure retention over longer time horizons instead of short-term signals.[12] For a game with a long metagame, that is the part that matters most.
Age checks and the three account types
As of the June 16, 2026 global rollout, Roblox splits users into three account types, and access is set by age check status, not by what someone typed into a birthday field.[7]
The rule underneath it: users who have not completed an age check cannot chat, regardless of age. Standard chat settings for Roblox accounts (16+) still require an age check, based on ID verification or facial age estimation.[7] Ages and settings vary by region.
How you age check:
The age check rollout also changed how chat works for everyone else. The global age check to chat requirement went live in January 2026, and Roblox's follow-up roadmap covered a Text Chat matchmaking signal, new API endpoints for grouping players by communication eligibility, Trusted Connections across age groups, and creator chat moderation tooling.[11] The pattern is the same in both directions: adult players get more, and the systems that would let them talk to minors get more locked down.
FAQ
Can I still play an 18+ game if I am 17?
No. Since the November 2025 change, access to Restricted games is blocked for all users under 18, up from the old 17+ rule. Creators of games that were already 17+ before the change kept access, but publishing a new Restricted game requires the creator to be 18 or older and age verified.[6]
Is 18+ the same as uncensored?
No. Sexual content is prohibited everywhere on Roblox, including in Restricted games, and that covers implied and suggestive content as well as explicit content. Extreme violence, animal abuse and real-world war crimes or mass shootings are banned too.[5]
My game uses R6. Can I still get the U.S. 18+ DevEx rate?
No. If a player can spawn as or swap to an R6 rig at any point during active play, the game is not eligible. You have to remove the R6 option. Custom human-form characters need 15+ parts or 15+ joints, an evenly distributed limb structure, and a torso with at least 2 parts or joints. Nonhuman-form and no-visible-character games qualify on their own terms.[2]
Does the 18+ rate stack with the Roblox Plus incentive?
No. Roblox says the two are not additive. You receive the higher of the two, which is the U.S. 18+ DevEx rate, applied to the same spend rather than both.[12]
Do I need to apply for Standout Games?
Yes. Standout Games is a nomination survey reviewed by the curation team on an ongoing basis, not an automatic badge. Roblox recommends recording gameplay footage, localizing the game, uploading a trailer, and reviewing your thumbnails before you submit.[3]
Do I have to age check to chat now?
Yes. Users who have not completed an age check cannot chat at all, regardless of their age. Age-checked 5-8 and 9-15 users are limited to their own or similar age groups, or to trusted friends. Age-checked 16+ users chat normally.[7][8]
Sources
- Roblox has raised the floor for Restricted (18+) games. Since the November 2025 update, anyone under 18 cannot open them, and search results plus recommendations for Restricted games are hidden from under-18 accounts.
- Restricted games need a Restricted content maturity label, which only shows up after the creator age-verifies as 18+ and completes the full Maturity & Compliance Questionnaire. The moment that label lands, every server of the game restarts and only age-verified 18+ players stay inside.
- Roblox introduced the U.S. 18+ DevEx rate on June 8, 2026. Earned Robux from age-checked 18+ U.S. players cash out at $0.54 per 100 Robux instead of $0.38, a 42% increase.
- Eligibility has a catch: your game has to use R15. If a player can spawn as or swap to an R6 rig at any point during active play, you lose the higher rate.
- Age checks are now mandatory to chat on Roblox, and the account system splits players into Roblox Kids (5-8), Roblox Select (9-15) and Roblox (16+), which arrived globally on June 16, 2026.
- Standout Games, a curated Home sort for "novel" games, gives prime placement to the kind of high-fidelity RPG, strategy, puzzle and shooter projects that attract older players.

That covers implied, suggestive and direct sexual content in behavior, interactions or settings. Extreme violence, animal abuse, real-world war crimes and real-world mass shootings are out too.[5]
What Restricted games can include:
- Violent content and gore: graphic, realistic-looking violence and heavy bloodshed.
- Romantic and sexual themes that stop short of sexual acts: non-sexual expressions of love and affection, and references to romantic themes, inside private spaces or adult settings.
- Alcohol: references to and depictions of alcohol use and intoxicated behavior, but not illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia, tobacco or vaping products.
- Strong language in the game itself, and in player text and voice chat if the creator enables it. Slurs and discriminatory speech stay banned.
- Social hangouts with private spaces, such as bedrooms or bathrooms.
- Generative AI interactions, unless the game is built around talking to an AI bot with no time limit or saves context across sessions.
The labels and who can open them:
| Minimal or Mild | Roblox Kids (5-8) and Roblox Select (9-15) |
| Moderate | Roblox Select (9-15) and standard Roblox (16+) |
| Content May Vary | Age-checked players 16 and older |
| Restricted | Age-verified players 18 and older only |
One detail people miss: when a game's label flips to Restricted, every running server restarts and removes everyone who has not age-verified as 18+. Studio does the same to any open collaboration session.[4]

The game side is where most games fail. Qualifying games need player characters that spend 100% of active playtime as one of these:[2]
- Platform avatars on a standard or advanced R15 rig.
- Custom human-form characters: roughly 1 head, 2 legs and 2 arms, 12 or more limb parts or 12 or more limb joints distributed evenly across limbs, a torso with at least 2 parts or 2 joints, and full bipedal range of motion with every joint articulating separately.
- Custom nonhuman-form characters. Games with no visible player character, like a top-down strategy game, meet the nonhuman-form criteria.
The most common mistake I see in dev forum threads is treating this as a passive bump. It is not. You have to verify your own account, lock your avatar settings to R15 Only, and keep any R6 path out of active play, or the rate simply never applies.

Age checks and the three account types
As of the June 16, 2026 global rollout, Roblox splits users into three account types, and access is set by age check status, not by what someone typed into a birthday field.[7]
| Age-checked 5-8 | Roblox Kids | Off, parent can change |
| Age-checked 9-15 | Roblox Select | Access increases gradually, parent can change |
| Age-checked 16+ | Roblox | On |
| Self-declared 5-8 | Roblox Kids | Off |
| Self-declared 9+ | Roblox Select | Off |
How you age check:
- Facial age estimation. The default route. Settings, Account info, Age Group, then "Continue with selfie." It scans for common fraud attempts and was tested by the UK's Age Check Certification Scheme.[8]
- Government ID. You must be at least 13 and hold a driver's license, passport, residency card or another government-issued photo ID. You scan the document, then capture a photo to prove you are the same person.[13]
- Parental controls. A linked parent account can correct a child's age after a check, once, and can also verify the child's age.[8]
