- On October 27, 2026, Roblox starts removing avatar heads that still do not meet the Marketplace Policy for Heads from player inventories. Heads that do get updated keep the same item ID, but a head nobody updates is deleted and the deletion cannot be undone.[1][2]
- A compliant head needs a caged model, defined eye and mouth regions, and at least 17 FACS controls that visibly express joy and sadness. The head does not have to look human, and the eye and mouth regions do not have to look like real eyes or a mouth.[1][3]
- The timeline has already moved four times since January 27, 2026, so treat any date you see quoted as provisional. The current version of the schedule was posted August 27, 2026.[1][4]
- The creator has to accept Roblox's auto-generated 3D version. Roblox says not every head can be fixed automatically, so the idea that Roblox will simply convert everything for you is not safe.[4]
- Roblox has not confirmed how refunds for removed heads will work, when they land, or what your avatar wears if the head you are using disappears.[5]
Every head on the Marketplace now has to be animated. That covers heads sold on their own and heads included in bundles. Roblox's validation checks two things: an outer cage that lets layered clothing and accessories sit correctly around the head, and facial animation poses that pass a basic movement test.[3]
The animation test is mechanical. Validation projects landmarks from the cage onto the head mesh, then checks that those landmarks move for left eye closed, right eye closed, mouth open, and happy and sad expressions. If the landmarks do not move enough, the upload fails.[3]
What a compliant head must include
- A caged model that envelops the head so accessories can layer over it.[1]
- Defined eye and mouth regions that respond to blink and mouth open or close.[1]
- At least 17 FACS controls that visibly express joy and sadness.[1]
- Nothing else. Roblox says a head does not have to look like a realistic human, and the eye and mouth regions do not have to look like traditional eyes and a mouth.[1]
The timeline, revised four times
Roblox first posted this policy on January 27, 2026, alongside a separate announcement about converting classic faces. The dates have moved repeatedly since, which is why so many players are confused about what is happening and when.[4]
| Date | What actually happens |
| January 27, 2026 | All new head submissions must meet the cage and FACS requirements.[1] |
| September 1, 2026 | Last day for creators to submit updated heads. Non-compliant heads stay on sale until Roblox finishes processing auto-generated versions.[4] |
| September 14, 2026 | Auto-generated 3D heads open for creator review. Not all heads get one.[4] |
| October 12, 2026 | Creators' deadline to review the animated versions Roblox generated. Heads left unreviewed after this go off sale.[5] |
| October 27, 2026 | Any head still not updated is removed from player inventories.[4] |
What you keep and what you lose
If the creator accepted the update, you keep your head. Roblox says the item ID stays the same and the head updates automatically, so it just starts moving.[5]
The quickest way to test your own head is to equip it in the avatar editor. If the eyes blink and the mouth moves, it already meets the new rules. If it sits completely still, it is a head to watch.[5]
If nobody updated it, it is removed on October 27. That removal is not reversible after the fact.[4][5]
How to check before the deadline
- Open the avatar editor and equip each head you own. Watch the eyes and mouth. Movement means compliant.
- If you make heads yourself, open Studio and review Roblox's auto-generated versions before October 12. Updating an asset you already paid to upload does not cost you anything.[1][5]
- If you are a creator and you reject the auto-generated version, replace it with your own compliant upload before October 27, or the head goes.
- If you hold a classic Limited face, you are not in this round. Those finished their own migration on March 23, 2026, and they kept their serial numbers and trading rules.[6][7]
Three gaps are still open as of mid October 2026, and they are the reason to be careful rather than relaxed.
First, refunds. A Roblox staff member said in January that owners of removed heads would get refunds, but Roblox has not confirmed the mechanism, the amount, or the timing.[5] For comparison, the December 2025 invisible head removal promised a full refund within seven business days plus an inbox message. Roblox has not said the October removal works the same way.[8]
Second, equipped heads. The December 2025 process reverted an equipped non-compliant head to the default head automatically. Roblox has not confirmed whether the October 27 removal does the same, so if the head you are wearing disappears, have a replacement ready.[8]
Third, bundles. If a head inside a bundle is removed, Roblox has not said what happens to the rest of the bundle or to the other items in it.[5]
The backlash, in the numbers
The reaction to the dynamic head push has been unusually large for a cosmetics policy. The two Roblox staff announcements on the developer forum drew 317k and 71.4k views respectively, with tens of thousands of likes and more than a thousand users participating.[6][9]
The March 23, 2026 classic face removal hit the trading market hard. Reporting at the time put classic Limited face values down between roughly 34% and 73% from their peaks, a median drop of about 60%, while blue chip hats gave back closer to 15%.[10]
Creators who built a business on static faces were the most exposed. One creator who had sold static face designs for years said the change threatened the income he used to pay rent.[11] That is the core complaint on the developer forum, and it has not gone away.
Roblox's counterargument is that one head system lets creators build once and have the head work everywhere, including in experiences with camera driven facial animation.[6] The company also added a toggle so players can turn facial animation off, and said that when the toggle is off the head locks into an expression matching the original classic face rather than reverting to a neutral blank.[6]
FAQ
Will Roblox automatically fix my heads so I do not have to do anything?
No. The creator has to accept Roblox's generated version, and Roblox says not every head can be fixed automatically. Heads that fail auto-generation need a manual fix or they are removed on October 27.[4]
What happens to my head on October 27 if the creator accepted the update?
Nothing bad. The item ID stays the same, the head updates automatically, and it keeps working. It just starts animating.[5]
Is October 12 the same as October 27?
No. October 12 is the creator review deadline for auto-generated versions. Heads unreviewed after that go off sale, which only stops new sales. October 27 is when heads that were never updated are removed from inventories.[5]
Do I get refunded if my head is removed?
A Roblox staff member said in January that owners would be refunded, but Roblox has not confirmed how or when. Watch your Robux balance and your inbox after the 27th.[5]
Are classic Limited faces like Red Tango part of this?
No. Those finished their own conversion to dynamic heads on March 23, 2026, and they kept their serial numbers and trading rules. This deadline targets the wider creator catalog, including heads inside bundles.[6][7]
How do I know if a head I want to buy is compliant?
Equip it in the avatar editor first. If the eyes blink and the mouth opens, it meets the rules. If it stays completely still, buying it now carries the risk that it is gone on October 27.[5]
