Roblox Custom Quick Words Guide (October 2026): Limits, Setup, the Policy Check, and What Players See
Posted: Tue Oct 20, 2026 7:55 pm
Quick Summary
Quick Words is Roblox's built-in preset system. Players open a small menu and pick a phrase instead of typing. It exists because free-form chat is restricted across age groups, and a team game still needs a way to say "group up" or "reload" without a keyboard.
Before October 2026 the phrases were identical everywhere. A horror game and a racing game both got the same generic callouts, because the list came from Roblox and not from the creator. Custom Quick Words change that. You define the phrases that fit your own experience, and Roblox reviews them before they go live.

The exact limits
The numbers decide what you can build, so here they are.
Setting | Value | Notes
Custom categories | 3 maximum | Your categories replace the default Roblox ones
Phrases per category | 3 to 10 | You cannot publish a category with fewer than three
Characters per phrase | Under 25 | Enforced by the Creator Hub input field
Input language | English only | Roblox translates approved phrases at runtime
General category | Always present | Not editable, available in every game
Review | Manual, per publish | Rejected phrases give no specific reason
The General category is the detail creators miss. You can swap your own three categories, but you cannot remove or edit General. That is where Roblox keeps phrases that apply to any game, and every player sees it no matter what you configure.

What the policy check looks for
Roblox published the preset system guidelines alongside the feature. They are the closest thing to a rubric, and they are strict in one direction: coordination yes, conversation no.
Allowed | Not allowed
"Attack", "Defend", "Hold Position" | "Why?", "Because"
"Follow me", "Ready", "Wait" | "Hi!", "Hello!", "What's up?"
"Reloading", "Cover me", "Nice shot" | Alphabet wheels or number encoding
"Well played", "Thanks" | Compliments with no link to gameplay
Two rules cause most rejections. Phrases must not be open-ended questions, and they must not gain meaning when combined or repeated. A wheel of single letters or digits is banned outright, because players can assemble it into arbitrary messages. Back-and-forth dialogue between age groups is banned too, since that would rebuild free-form chat through the back door.
The guidelines also list technical rules that apply if you build your own preset system instead of using Quick Words: presets must be labeled as system presets in chat, the UI must look different from native chat, no terminal punctuation, every preset must pass, you need a ten-second rate limit per send, and you can display at most 12 presets per universe.

Why this feature exists
Roblox has been pushing preset systems as the answer to a real problem. Free-form chat is limited by age group, and voice chat is age-restricted. That leaves a gap for players who need to coordinate but cannot type freely. Quick Words fills it with phrases that are pre-approved, so a nine-year-old and a teenager can both send "Need help" without either being able to type whatever they want.
The lightning bolt marker is the other half of the design. Players and parents can see that a message came from the preset menu rather than a keyboard, which is the safety argument for allowing it at all.

What players see
From the player side, Quick Words are an icon next to the chat input bar. Tapping it opens the phrase list. Approved phrases appear in the Here and Global tabs of the chat window, subject to regional availability. Messages carry a lightning bolt marker in both chat and bubble chat, so a preset is always visually distinct from typed text.
Custom phrases behave the same way. Once your categories are published and approved, they show up in that same menu for everyone in your experience.

What developers are saying
The announcement thread is busy, and the complaints cluster around concrete points rather than vague dislike. Several creators want the feature extended to sub-places, so a large game could give each route its own station names. Others want to know whether Quick Words can be triggered from a custom chat UI instead of only the default Roblox chat. Emojis and basic symbols are rejected, which several people called unnecessary. A number of comments ask for a reason code on "Not approved", which Roblox has not provided.

What is still missing
Roblox says licensed asset packs are coming later this year, and the Quick Words page frames the feature as a first step rather than a finished system. Concretely, there is no per-sub-place configuration, no emoji support, no programmatic trigger for custom chat UIs, and no explanation on rejected phrases. If any of those are load-bearing for your game, plan around them rather than waiting.

FAQ
How many custom Quick Words can I add?
Three custom categories, each holding three to ten phrases. That is a maximum of 30 custom phrases per experience, plus the General category that Roblox keeps.
Do Quick Words work for players who cannot type?
Yes. Quick Words are pre-validated phrases, so they are available regardless of a player's typing permissions. They are built for players of all ages and carry a lightning bolt marker so the distinction is always visible.
Can I use custom Quick Words in a custom chat UI?
Not directly. The feature hooks into Roblox's built-in chat window. Creators have asked for an API to open the Quick Words menu from a custom UI, and Roblox has not announced one.
Why did my Quick Words get rejected?
Roblox does not publish a reason. The preset system guidelines ban open-ended questions, social or identity questions, terminal punctuation, slang with shifting meanings, and anything that gains meaning when combined or repeated. Trim the phrase and resubmit.
Do Quick Words get translated?
Yes. You enter them in English, and Roblox translates approved phrases automatically based on each player's chat language setting.
Do custom Quick Words replace the default ones?
Your three custom categories replace the default Roblox categories. The General category remains available to all players in every game and cannot be edited.

- Custom Quick Words launched on October 13, 2026. Creators can define their own preset chat phrases instead of relying on Roblox's built-in list.
- The limits are fixed: three custom categories, three to ten phrases each, and every phrase under 25 characters.
- Your custom categories replace the default Roblox categories. The General category stays in every game and cannot be edited.
- Phrases are entered in English only. Roblox translates approved phrases for each player, and the chat UI marks presets with a lightning bolt so nobody mistakes one for typed text.
- Every submission goes through a policy review. A failed phrase shows as "Not approved" with no reason given, so the only fix is to reword and resubmit.
- Quick Words are for gameplay coordination, not conversation. Anything that reads like a question or a back-and-forth gets rejected.
