- Roblox accounts are worth real money to thieves, and 2026 gave us the proof: a single operation compromised over 610,000 accounts and made roughly $225,000 selling access to them.
- If you lose your account, you have a hard deadline. Contact Roblox within 30 days of the compromise if you want any shot at recovering lost items or currency.
- Roblox will not promise to restore anything. It states plainly that it is under no obligation to return a compromised account to its previous state.
- Recovery works far better if you can prove ownership with the original email address or the billing email from the account's first payment.
- The single most effective lock is 2-Step Verification by Authenticator App, plus backup codes saved somewhere offline, because losing your only 2SV method can lock you out for good.
An account is not just a username. It can hold a Robux balance, items that went off-sale years ago and can no longer be bought at any price, years of progress and achievements, and paid access to premium content. That combination is what makes an account sellable, and it is why this is a criminal business rather than kids messing around. Ukrainian police arrested three people in Lviv who allegedly ran one of the largest Roblox account theft operations to date. The group is said to have compromised over 610,000 Roblox accounts, including at least 357 high-value accounts, and made around $225,000 from selling access to them. They distributed infostealing malware disguised as game enhancement tools, harvested login credentials from infected devices, and sold the accounts through a Russian website and closed online communities, priced by value. If you ever downloaded a "free Robux" tool or a script executor from a random site, that is the pattern this operation used.
The important detail is that the malware, not Roblox's own login system, is what broke in. Recovering your password does not help if a keylogger on your machine simply captures the new one.
First: stop the bleeding
Do this before you try to recover anything. If the malware is still on your computer, you will recover the account and lose it again in a week.
- Run a full virus scan, restart, and run it a second time. A quick scan is not enough for infostealers.
- Remove any browser extensions you did not install deliberately. Keep only ones from verified sources.
- If the scans removed anything, clear your browser history and cookies completely. This logs you out of most websites, which is what you want.
- Change your password to something unique to Roblox, and change the password on the email attached to the account too. If the email is compromised, the account is not recoverable no matter how good your Roblox password is.
- If you can still log in, go to Settings and Security and use the option at the bottom of the page to log out of all other sessions. Stolen cookies can keep a thief in your account even after you change the password.
This is the detail most people miss until it is too late. Roblox states that in the very limited circumstances where it may offer a compromised account owner the ability to recover lost inventory, or its approximate value, you must contact Roblox within 30 days of the compromise. Wait past that window and the option is largely gone.
There is a second part to the same sentence that people read past. Unless required by law, Roblox is under no obligation to assist users whose accounts have been compromised. It does not guarantee that an account will be restored to its previous state, and it does not guarantee that lost virtual items or virtual currency can be recovered. Only in very limited circumstances will it consider offering the inventory or an approximate value instead.
The practical read: the 30 days is not a guarantee of a refund, it is a deadline for asking. Recovery of the account itself is a separate process from recovery of what was on it. Independent reporting puts the support process at roughly 2 to 5 days.
What support will ask you for
Roblox needs to be sure you are the original owner. It tells you to contact it using either the first email address added to the account or the billing email address used for the very first payment. That original information stays useful even if the account was compromised and the email on it was changed, because it predates the theft.
If the account never had an email address attached, or a credit card or PayPal purchase linked to its creation, Roblox says it can still explore other options to verify ownership. Do not walk into that process empty-handed. The more of the following you can produce, the better your case:
- Your account username.
- The original email address used to create the account.
- Payment information or purchase receipts showing Robux transactions.
- The approximate date and time of the compromise.
- Screenshots showing account details from before the compromise, including the creation date.
- Previous account settings or any other details that prove ownership.
Lock it back down with 2-Step Verification
Once you are back in, the priority changes from recovery to making sure it cannot happen again. Roblox offers three 2-Step Verification methods, and you can only have one active at a time:
- Authenticator App: Roblox's recommended option. Requires an authenticator app on your phone, such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Duo, or Twilio Authy. It is the strongest of the three because it does not depend on your email inbox staying secure.
- Email: A code is sent to the verified email on the account each time you log in with your password. Simple, but it fails if the email itself is compromised.
- Security Keys: A physical key such as a YubiKey 5 or Google Titan Security Key, or a biometric method managed by your device hardware. Roblox requires you to already have 2-Step Verification by Authenticator App enabled before you can add a security key, so you have a way back in if you lose the physical key.
There is a rule here that catches people out. If you have 2-Step Verification turned on and then lose access to your primary 2SV method, you will need two different verification methods in your account details to recover access. If you do not have enough backup methods added, Roblox says you may be unable to regain access to your account. The lock you added to stop thieves can lock you out, so set up the backups at the same time:
- Add a phone number: a second way to prove it is you. Account Info tab, ages 13 and over.
- Add a passkey: lets you sign in without a 2SV code. Account Info tab, all ages.
- Save backup codes: one-time use codes that get you in if you lose the other methods. Security tab, all ages.
How to tell a scam from the real thing
The other half of account security is not giving the account away in the first place. Roblox is blunt about the most common method: players lose accounts by sharing login information directly with others, or by filling out online surveys. Anyone asking for your password, browser cookies, 2SV codes, backup codes, personal details, or sensitive computer information is trying to steal the account. Roblox employees will never ask for any of it.
A few rules worth memorising, because they are the ones that actually stop theft:
- Roblox does not make browser extensions. There are no official Roblox browser extensions, so any extension claiming to be official is not.
- The only links allowed on Roblox are links to other pages from roblox.com, or those specified in the Roblox Community Standards. A link with spaces or unusual characters, or one to a site you do not know, should not be trusted even if the person sending it is someone you know.
- Only enter your login information on the official roblox.com website or the login screen of the official Roblox apps. If an experience asks for it, leave the experience and report it.
- Never screen share or send images of your screen while entering account information such as your date of birth or PIN.
- Never add someone else's email address to your account. If it is there, they receive the password reset emails.
- Official Roblox promotions are announced through the blog, the Notifications tab in Messages, or a banner at the top of the site. Anything else claiming to be a giveaway is not.
- Do not download or run a program without a parent's permission. Malware and keyloggers collect passwords.
FAQ
How long do I have to ask Roblox about lost items or Robux?
You must contact Roblox within 30 days of the compromise. Roblox says so in its own account recovery article. The 30 days is the deadline for asking, not a promise that anything will be returned.
Will Roblox give me my items back?
Not guaranteed, and often no. Roblox states that unless required by law it is under no obligation to assist users whose accounts were compromised, and that it does not guarantee an account will be restored to its previous state or that lost items and currency can be recovered. In very limited circumstances it may offer the inventory or an approximate value instead.
What do I do if the hacker changed both my password and my email?
Contact Roblox support anyway and use the first email address ever added to the account or the billing email from the first payment. That information predates the theft. Provide receipts, the approximate date and time of the compromise, and any screenshots showing account details from before, including the creation date.
Which 2-Step Verification method should I pick?
The Authenticator App. Roblox recommends it, and it is the strongest option because it does not depend on your email inbox staying secure. Security keys are stronger still but require an authenticator app as a fallback, so you are not locked out if you lose the key.
I lost my recovery codes. Can I get them back?
No, and that is by design. Backup codes are shown once and never again. You create a new set from the Security tab, and doing so deactivates all the previous codes. Save the new set offline the moment you generate it.
Is Roblox ever going to ask me for my password?
No. Roblox employees will never ask for your password, cookies, 2SV codes, or backup codes. Anyone who does is a scammer, and you can report them with the Report Abuse feature.
