- An age check is what unlocks chat, age-restricted games, and the standard Roblox account type instead of Roblox Kids or Roblox Select.
- Two methods work: facial age estimation, which uses a selfie and no document, and ID verification, which needs a government photo ID and is open to users 13 and older.
- An age check can only be undone once per account, so do not spend the reset testing the feature.
- If the birthday on your ID differs from the one on your account, Roblox overwrites the account birthday with the date from the ID.
- A linked parent can fix a child's birthday only once, and not at all once that child has verified with a government ID.
Roblox splits players into age groups, and the group you sit in decides what you can reach. Users under 9 land in Roblox Kids, users 9 and older land in Roblox Select, and both start with chat switched off. The standard Roblox account type, the one with full access, is meant for users 16 and older.
Completing an age check is required for a specific list of features, not just the catalog. You need it for chat, for chat without filters with trusted friends, for collaborating in Team Create inside Studio, for 16+ and 18+ age-restricted content, for playing games carrying a Content May Vary rating, for reaching games outside the Kids and Select catalogs, and for inviting or acting as an early tester on someone else's game.
If you skip the age check, Roblox falls back on the birthday you typed at sign-up to place you. That placement works for a while, but it locks the chat features above, and it decides which catalog your account is measured against. Access also depends on your region and your account settings, so two players in the same age group can still see different catalogs.
The age groups and what each one reaches
| Age group | Account type | Content access |
| Under 9 | Roblox Kids | Games rated for your age. A parent must allow chat with similar age groups or Trusted Friends. |
| 9 to 12 | Roblox Select | Games rated for your age, plus chat with similar age groups or Trusted Friends with parental permission. |
| 13 to 15 | Roblox Select | Games rated for your age, chat with similar age groups or Trusted Friends, and more features. |
| 16 to 17 | Roblox | Every game except 18+ titles, including Content May Vary. Chat stays limited to similar age groups and Trusted Friends. |
| 18+ | Roblox | Full access to games and features. |
Facial age estimation works by analysing images and video of your face. Roblox deletes the images and video after the age estimation is finished. Your estimated age places you in a finer band, 5-8, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20, or 21+, and that band shapes the experience. One detail worth knowing: if the estimate puts you in the 5-8 or 9-12 band, Roblox removes some personal data from your account, including your email address and phone number. In certain regions a parent has to approve facial age estimation before you can run it, and if the system cannot estimate you at all, ID verification is the only path left.
ID verification needs a government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license, passport, residency card, or state ID, and it is only available to users 13 and older. Roblox uses Persona as its third-party verification provider, so the images pass through their system as well.
How to run ID verification, step by step
- Log into your account on Roblox.
- Open Settings using the gear icon in the top-right corner on a browser, or the three-dot More icon in the mobile apps.
- Select the Account Info tab.
- Underneath your birthday and age group, click the button labelled Continue with ID.
- Click Continue and follow the prompts, allowing camera access.
- Scan your ID document. Roblox detects the document type, and if there is a barcode on the back, capture that side too.
- Take the photo of yourself that is used to match you against the ID.
- Return to your original Roblox session, where the status updates live. A pass or fail usually takes a few minutes.
Fixing the birthday on your account
If you mistyped your birthday at sign-up, you can correct it yourself:
- Log into your Roblox account.
- Go to Settings.
- Select the Account Info tab.
- Click the pencil icon next to your birthday.
- Enter the correct date and follow the prompts.
Parents take a different route through linked accounts. Log into your own parent account, open Settings, select Parental Controls, pick the child if you have several linked, click the pencil icon next to their avatar, then the arrow beside their birthday. Two restrictions catch people out. A linked parent can update a child's birthday only once, and if the child has already verified their age with a government ID, the birthday can no longer be changed through parental controls. If the arrow is not there, the option is not available to you.
The one-time undo, and the 48-hour grace period
An age check can be undone, but only once per account. Go to Settings, then Account Info, and click Reset underneath your birthday and age group, then Continue on the next screen. This works whether the age check came from facial age estimation or from ID verification. Read the wording carefully: your age checked status can only be undone once per account, so do not use it to test the feature.
If you report yourself as over 13 but the estimate comes back under 13, your account enters a 48-hour grace period before the update is final. You can skip the wait by opening Settings, then Account Info, and selecting Accept Now under Birthday.
How the age groups meet content maturity ratings
Age groups decide which catalog you are measured against, and content maturity ratings describe what a game contains. They work together rather than replacing each other. Ratings run from Minimal and Mild through Moderate and Content May Vary up to 16+ and Restricted and 18+ Content.
Three of the upper ratings carry hard age gates. Moderate games that include social hangouts without private spaces or free-form user creation are only available to age-checked users 16 and older. Content May Vary games, which are published to 16 and older without the full Maturity and Compliance questionnaire, are also only available to age-checked users 16 and older in most regions, and they are not available in all regions at all. Restricted and 18+ games need an age-checked 18+ user. Parents can allow 16+ sensitive-issue games for a child of any age, but that exception does not extend to the 18+ tier.
FAQ
Why is chat switched off on my account?
You have not completed an age check. Users who have not age checked cannot chat on Roblox regardless of their age, and self-declared users are placed into Roblox Kids or Roblox Select with chat off until they complete one.
Does facial age estimation cost anything or need an ID?
No. It is a selfie-based estimate with no document required. ID verification is the route that needs a government photo ID, and only users 13 and older can use it.
I am 14. Can I use ID verification?
Yes. The requirement is 13 or older, not 18. Any user 13 and up with a valid government photo ID can complete it.
What happens to the photo and video I submit?
Roblox deletes the images and video it collects for facial age estimation after the age assurance process is complete. ID documents are handled by the verification provider, Persona, and Roblox says it stores the information for the purposes stated in its Privacy Policy.
Can I undo my age check?
Yes, once. Click Reset underneath your birthday and age group in Settings, then Account Info, then Continue. There is no second undo.
My age got estimated too low. What now?
If your account age is over 13, go to Settings, then Account Info, and select Continue with ID. If it is under 13, click the pencil icon next to your birthday and correct it there. A linked parent can also update the birthday once if you are under 18.
