Team Create and collaborator permissions in Roblox Studio: what Owner, Edit, and Play actually grant
If you build with other people in Roblox Studio, two separate systems decide what everyone can do: the permission level you set for each collaborator, and the age rules Studio applies before anyone can join a session. They are not the same thing, and a collaborator can be blocked from a session while still holding Edit.

The four permission levels

When you add a collaborator to a game, you pick one of these.
  • Owner: can configure other users' permissions.
  • Edit: can edit the game, and this also grants Play.
  • Play: can play the game privately.
  • No Access: no Edit and no Play.
Group games and user owned games

For a group game, only the group owner or members with enough permissions can manage the group's roles. They can grant Edit across every game the group owns, or on a per game basis. Adding a single person as a collaborator to a group game works the same way as it does for a user owned game, but only grants Play.

To give Edit to a whole group role across all group games, open the Creator Dashboard, use the account switcher to select the group, go to Roles, and enable Edit experiences for the roles that should have it. Click Save Changes for each role you edit. Inside Studio's Manage Collaborators window, eligible group roles show Edit permission but muted, because you cannot change that level from Studio.

A per game override is possible too. In Studio's Manage Collaborators window for a group game, pick Edit from the permissions dropdown for the roles you want. That works only for roles that do not already have Edit across all group games.

For a game you own personally, you can grant Play to any user or group, but Edit only goes to Roblox friends. Open the game in Studio, click Collaborate on the mezzanine bar, search for the friend, set Edit in the dropdown, and save.

Age based rules

Adding collaborators through Team Create requires an age check, done by verifying an ID or completing a facial age estimation. Group or game owners need to complete it before the rest of their collaborators can join their games. You can still use Team Create alone without an age check.

After the check, you can only collaborate with creators in compatible age groups by default.
  • Under 9: with users under 13, not 13 and older.
  • 9 to 12: with users under 16, not 16 and older.
  • 13 to 15: with users aged 9 to 17, not under 9 or 18 and older.
  • 16 to 17: with users 13 and older, not under 13.
  • 18 and older: with users 16 and older, not under 16.
To work across those lines you either have to become a trusted friend with every collaborator who has already opened the game, or get permission from a linked parent account through the collaboration parental controls. Trusted friend requests from users under 13 need parental approval, and in some regions that also applies to older teenagers. Once you meet a requirement and join a session, you keep access unless you lose trusted friend status with a required collaborator or a parent revokes the Studio permission.

Collaborators who cannot join a session because of these rules still keep Edit. They can publish a copy of the game with Save As, use Open Cloud APIs, and manage the game's metadata in Creator Hub.

Turning collaboration off

Team Create turns on automatically when you use the Manage Collaborators dialog, but you can disable it. Open the Live Collaborators window, click the three dot button in the bottom right, choose Disable Team Create, and confirm. Studio reloads the place in a non collaborative state.
